The Var (River)

I think this one stumped most if not all of the people in the quiz I took part in, and I have to admit that I'm struggling to identify a Claim to Fame for the Var – except that it's the only river in France that shares its name with a département but doesn't flow through that département.

The Var is about 70 miles long, and flows into the Mediterranean a few miles west of Nice.

Wikipedia has one spectacular photo of a village that overlooks its gorge, but I'm far from convinced that this is enough to make it into a major tourist attraction. Still, something must have brought it to the attention of the question setter ...

On a more serious note, this is the first of three "river" questions in the General Knowledge rounds that went to the same person (see questions 48 and 72).
